One of the largest dams built in India, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is located between Guntur and Nalagonda districts of Andhra Pradesh. This multi-purpose damis built on the river Krishna. One of the earliest hydro-electric projects of India, its initial name was “Nandikonda Project” on the village “Nandikonda” that was completely submerged in the water.

It makes for an interesting tour option with opportunities for sight seeing as well with its rich history. Located at a distance of 150 km from Hyderabad, Nagarjuna Sagar is also one of the prominent Buddhist centers along with being an attractive tourists spot.

The place has name Nagarjuna, one of the respected Buddhist monks, who governed the Sangha for almost 60 years around 2nd century AD. The archaeological significance of the place is also immense as excavations have showed that Nagarjunasagar was a center for the for Buddhist activities and teaching in the southern part of India. Four major Viharas have been set up by Buddhist at this place.apart from this, place has other historical significance as well. For example, it was one of the first Hindu kingdoms of South India, it was the capital city of Ikshvakus.

For those of you who like more than just archaeological significance, there re some interesting things do at the Nagarjuna Sagar. Sight seeing the waterfall is n amazing experience in itself. A short ride on a traditional boat ride called a ‘theppa’ can be quite exciting ad unique. You have steam boat rides that take you to the dam.

Along with all this, the island of Nagarjuna Konda is also worth visiting. Buddhist Museum in Nagarjuna-Konda can also make for an interesting visit.
